Protected areas Connecting with unspoilt nature

Located in the heart of the Terres d’Aveyron region, between the Lot Valley and the Causse Comtal, our protected natural areas are home to a remarkable array of flora and fauna. Take the time for a hike or a nature activity, and discover the fragility and diversity of their environments. Whether you’re a naturalist at heart or simply an adventurer.

The Regional Nature Reserve des coteaux du Fel

After 11 years in existence, and reclassified in 2022 for an unlimited period, the Coteaux du Fel Regional Nature Reserve is the only one of its kind in Aveyron. Suspended over a wild part of the Lot Valley, it extends over 123 ha. Between dry moors, forests and ancient meadows, the variety of its environments constitutes a veritable sanctuary for biodiversity. Rare species such as the forest cat, the European nightjar and the ocellated lizard can be observed here.

Our top tips for discovering the reserve
  • This hikers’ paradise is criss-crossed by 2 long-distance trails: the GRP Lo Camin d’Olt and the GR 465. You can also make a loop on the PR14 bis.
  • Discovery walks organized by the LPO (Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux). On the program: understanding the environment, observing and recording species…

Plans for 2025: Construction of the Maison de la Réserve, to enhance understanding and appreciation of the environment.

The Regional Nature Park de l'Aubrac

On the banks of the Lot and Truyère rivers climb the foothills of the Aubrac Regional Nature Park, to which six of our villages are attached. A land of character and authenticity, Aubrac offers its almost mystical landscapes right on our doorstep. Spread across Cantal, Aveyron and Lozère, the park created in 2018 aims to protect the incredible natural wealth of this territory of contrasting landscapes, rocks and climates. Emblematic of the plateau, the Aubrac cow invites you to take part in a wide range of activities.

Sensitive natural areas du Causse Comtal

Preserving fragile environments while maintaining human activity is the sustainable development approach adopted by Aveyron through its Espaces Naturels Sensibles (ENS) program. There are 4 of these on the Causse Comtal, each with its own surprising characteristics. Get out your magnifying glasses and hiking boots for a family nature walk!

Our Natura 2000 sites

  • The Lot Valley and its tributaries

The Lot Valley and its tributaries , the Goul and the Truyère in its gorges, have been classified as a Natura 2000 zone in parts of our territory. Renowned for the quality of its water, the river is home to two species sensitive to this characteristic, such as the sculpin fish and the European otter, queen of acrobatics. Heaths, grasslands, alluvial woodlands… no fewer than 17 habitats have been defined as being of Community interest. Immerse yourself in this preserved universe through our outdoor activities.

  • The Gages-Cayssac site

In the south-east of our territory, the Gages-Cayssac Natura 2000 site plunges you into the distinct reliefs of the causse and the rougier. These stony kingdoms are home to rare species of orchid, as well as strange creatures such as the little rhinolope and the touroulis. Find out who they are on a family outing along 2 dedicated hiking trails.

All responsible Preserving our protected areas

  • I take my garbage home after a walk
  • I leave flowers and plants where they are so that they can reproduce and everyone can enjoy their beauty
  • I keep my dog on a leash
  • I don’t light fires and I take my cigarette butts with me.
  • I stay on the marked trails so as not to trample the flora
  • I observe wildlife in silence
  • I respect the peace and quiet of the herds, and keep fences closed
  • I park my vehicle at the trailhead, respecting the traffic of local residents.
  • Motorized vehicles are forbidden on the Gages-Cayssac site or the Réserve Régionale des coteaux du Fel.
