Journey to the heart of our villages From colorful buildings to exceptional edifices

In this rugged yet majestic natural setting, man has humbly found his place while respecting his environment. He has learned to tame nature, building engineering masterpieces and remarkable edifices from the materials it provides. Witnesses to the geology of our soils, they reveal our history in a colorful palette that, from gorges and causse to valleys, will never cease to disorientate you. From small vernacular heritage to religious art, from our bridges to our majestic castles, discover their beauty in our perched or fortified villages, witnesses to our past and the lives of our ancestors.

The “Plus Beaux Villages de France®” label

Not to be confused with “Le village préféré des Français” (the French people’s favorite village), elected on a TV show, the PBVF label is awarded by the association of the same name to villages rich in natural and built heritage that present themselves as candidates for this label. However, a precise list of criteria must be met in order to obtain the label, including: fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, at least 2 sites on the Monuments Historiques list, and the implementation of a policy to promote their heritage.

One of the 11 Most Beautiful Villages in France® in Aveyron, Estaing was awarded the label in 1982, as were Conques and Najac, the first 3 Aveyron villages, and 66 other villages in France, following in the footsteps of Collonges-la-Rouge in the Dordogne, the initiator of the labeling project. Saint-Côme-d’Olt was awarded the label 5 years later, in 1987.

Today, Aveyron boasts the highest number of Plus Beaux Villages de France®.

Stone is the story of nòstre país – our country, from ochres to greys, pinks to ruby reds, the soil that has colored our buildings over the centuries. From the cazelles that have sheltered generations of shepherds to the sécadous where winter rations were dried, you’ll be as surprised by the diversity of this vernacular heritage as by the architectural richness of our most beautiful buildings. “
