Saint-Côme-d'Olt Plus Beaux Village de France® (Most Beautiful Village in France)

Situated in the foothills of the Aubrac mountains, Saint-Côme-d’Olt, a stopover village on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, opens its doors to the Lot Valley. This charming medieval village, Plus Beaux Villages de France®, is all about the good life on the banks of the Lot.
You’ll lose your head as you whirl around its winding streets, and what’s more, its astonishing bell tower!

Saint-Côme d'Olt Unusual and twirling

Made of limestone or river pebbles, its Renaissance residences evoke the past power of the Barons of Calmont d’Olt. As you wander through the narrow streets, you’ll come across some surprising hull-shaped roofs. Typical of the Lot Valley, they are shaped like the hulls of overturned boats. Take one of the three gates leading into the circular enclosure. They will invariably lead you to the heart of the church, to admire its singular bell tower.

It’s enough to make you roll your eyes and spiral with astonishment!

A twisted bell tower Qu'es acho?

 Twisted as in twisted

Or flamed like a candle – enough to arouse passions! There are almost a hundred of them in Europe, all more or less “twisted”, depending on whether they were commissioned for architectural reasons or due to the natural twisting of badly dried timber. Here, Antoine Salvanh, architect of Rodez Cathedral, is credited with this originality. The flame evokes the elevation of prayer to heaven, from evil to good.

Legend has it that the Devil is to blame for this? It’s said that he had perched himself up there to observe a procession. Dazzled by the beauty of the bride, he leaned over to admire her, and caused the steeple to buckle under his weight!

Transhumance A must-see in Saint-Côme d'Olt

A not-to-be-missed event at the end of May, the Transhumance, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the legacy of Aubrac’s long pastoral history. Attending this festival promises to be a unique experience, immersing you in local culture through age-old traditions and know-how. It’s at this time of year that the herds leave the Lot Valley for theAubrac summer pastures. There, they spend the summer grazing on flowers and grasses to give their milk flavor and strength to their young.
